No trip to the Bay of Plenty would be complete without visiting our giant of the sea, the active marine volcano White Island. Decades ago, the volcano was inhabited by sulphur-miners, but a tragic eruption and avalanche put paid to any kind of human life on the island, except the visitors who journey to the island
You can visit White Island by boat with Peejay Tours. The journey to and from the island is a beautiful one, and you will often see dolphins along the way. Once at White Island, don your hard hat and gas mask and prepare to see volcanic crater lakes, steam hissing from vents that go deep into the volcano's core, bizarre rock formations, bright yellow sulphur crystals and so much more. Many people say that walking on White Island must be like walking on the moon! You'll also be guided around the old mining site, seeing ruins and learning about the history of the island.
White Island is also a very dramatic presence from the air, and there are several companies who can take you on a flight over the sea and out to the volcano.
